He who is Photographed
“Now, once I feel observed by a lens, everything changes: I constitute myself in the process of “posing,”… I transform myself… but “myself” never coincides with my image.”
- Barthes. R, “he who is photographed”, Camera Lucida
In my work I explore the performance of portraiture in relation to photography. The presence of a camera can affect people in a profound way. I’m interested in the point at which people change themselves in front of the camera when they ‘pose’ – the moment when they are not themselves, the moment when they disappear.
